Building Community, Fostering Student Success

Our Approach

MATE help students from marginalized groups navigate educational systems that were not designed for their inclusion. Aligning with current research on degree attainment, opportunity gaps, student retention, and student success, we focus on college transitions for African American students in the D.C. metropolitan area.

Our Strategy

Each MATE Scholar is paired with a mentor and an academic advisor to help them deal with academic, social, and emotional challenges as they transition to the college environment. MATE also offsets the cost of books and supplies in students' first year, and provides much-needed
financial scholarships.

Our Impact

As a small, community-centered organization, MATE focuses its resources for the greatest impact. Annually, we engage 2-3 MATE Scholars and activate our Founding Committee, a network of 15 individuals committed to leveraging support and resources for MATE Scholars.

OUR MISSION

MATE's mission is to build a community of individuals and institutions committed to fostering student success, college degree attainment, and educational equity for D.C.-area students transitioning from high school to local universities. The organization provides scholarships, mentoring, and academic advising to African American students with financial need who are entering their freshman year of college.

Notes From Our MATE Scholars

“The people that are part of MATE are like parents that actually understand the pressure of college which has been incredibly helpful because that was something very important I lacked.”
